Are you worried that you waited too long to get in shape? Don't be silly. You are never too old to start.
Yes, it is inevitable that things are going to change as we age. For example, if you do not stretch, then you will feel stiff, and if you do not work your muscles regularly, then they will grow weak and get flabby. In addition, if you do not raise your heart-rate once in awhile, you will get out of breath walking up the stairs. It happens to us all.
As I am sure you know, exercise reduces the risk of most diseases, improves brain function and helps to maintain the ability to have balance and power. This is extremely important to prevent falls. It is no longer just about how you look in jeans. The back needs to be supple, the feet need to be able to lift off the floor, and maintaining the ability to walk any distance is paramount. Tasks such as being able to open up a jar and put things overhead are vital to having self-sufficiency.
In my opinion, there is not an option to not move regularly. Not moving feels very selfish to me. Who is going to help you when you can no longer do things for yourself?
However, I do not recommend overdoing it right out of the gate as recovery isn’t quite as fast as it was in our younger days. Don't overthink this. It just means that it s important to get adequate food, sleep, and not do too much right away. Listen to your body. When it feels tired, rest. If you feel wonderful, add some more abdominal exercises, cardio work or lift some heavier weights. It does not have to be so complicated.
One of the amazing things about exercise is how little is required to see benefits. Going for a brisk walk every day won’t turn you into an Olympic athlete but it comes with a host of positive benefits.
So if you’re not ready to dive into formal exercise, that’s totally ok. But if you’re currently not doing anything at all, simply adding in 20-30 minutes of walking will be a great addition to your life.
You will find some exercise videos on my Youtube channel, Jamie Gallo. I also have some posted on this website. Please feel free to try them out and don't forget to let me know what you are interested in seeing more of. I love to hear from you!
By the way, I'm 57 in that picture, mom of 2 teens and not a crazy fanatic when it comes to diet or exercise. What I am is consistent!
With love and blessings,
Jamie
