The Magic Pill: Reflections on a Netflix documentary.

“A lot of what Industrial agriculture thinking is that the earth is a reluctant lover. Whereas, actually, we view the earth as an abundant, loving partner who responds to caress, who responds to care, and if we will come humbly to the land, why, it’s ready to give us way more than we could have wrestled from it.”

I love this statement from the wonderful documentary, The Magic Pill. Whether you agree or disagree with its premise of eating a lower carbohydrate diet with a higher fat and protein intake, it makes some very strong points about the state of our food industry and I recommend watching it if you can.  It will open up your mind to the possibility that we can increase our health by monitoring our food intake.

I  feel that seeing strong images, like the ones shown in this film, will reinforce our decision to eat wisely most of the time.

As a proponent of the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit, these quoted words can also be applied to our personal and professional relationships.  In most cases, when we approach another with an open heart, our experience will be one that we enjoy and grow from.

I find it always interesting to watch behavior change when we are out of balance.  I'm watching it now with my kids as they are navigating their changing bodies and the demands on their time.

When their blood sugar is low I know I will be seeing irritability.  My son will be asleep on his way to jujitsu and come out elated and awake after a bout of exercise.  They haven't got into the meditation habit, as I wish they would, but my teenage son will have a heart to heart with me at night in the car.  I think the darkness and the side by side position is somehow less threatening.  At least that is what I heard from other parents.  :)

It's such a simple thing to realize and yet hard to actualize.  When we take care of our bodies, our minds feel better, and when we have a healthy mindset, our spirit can soar.  Viewing it a different way, when our minds are healthy, we want to do what we need to have a working body.  When our spirit is elated, we don't usually have a strong desire to reach for simple sugars.  It is an amazing loop and always fascinating!
