Tips from an Italian on how to keep your home safe from Covid 19.

I thank "ital mover" who wrote this as.a  comment for an article on keeping your home virus-free for Houzz.  It is so well done that I am keeping it very close to his original comment.

Hi from Italy! Here are some tips if you are sharing space with a whole family:

Take off your shoes before walking through the house. Leave them in the entry.

Put some hand sanitizer and paper towels right by the entry doors.

See if you can order the kinds of paper towels that you find in dispensers in restaurants. Separate sheets of paper. Don't put them in a dispenser. Just leave them in a stack by the sink. You'll use less and also avoid touching a whole roll to pull off one sheet.

Give everybody their personal space for charging devices and using them. Don't share devices is you can help it. If you must share devices, clean the surfaces before and after sharing.

If you must go outside and don't have gloves, run your fingernails (and your kid's fingernails) over a bar of soap, which helps keep germs from hiding under the nails. If you use a very fragrant soap, you're also less likely to touch your face, mouth, nose or eyes unconsciously.

If you get non-perishable deliveries, leave them outside for a day or two. (Mail, too.)

If you've got a bunch of mismatched socks, use them as gloves when you go get the mail, etc. Toss them in the wash.

Finally, a tip from the Mediterranean: If you have oregano in the house, rub a big pinch of the leaves between palms, grind your fingertips into, and inhale the aroma. The oils in oregano are scientifically proven to be anti-bacterial -- plus, the "aromatherapy" really will lift your spirits. Toss oregano into your food too!

Stay well! Stay home!

Thank you, again, ital mover, for your wonderful and thoughtful comment.  Of course, the best thing is to stay put!  I like to check in with friends and family often, eat well and exercise, and try to get sleep.  This can be a time to read, enjoy family, learn something new at home, or start that home project that has been on your to-do list for way too long.  It's stressful and crazy-making but our personal response to this crisis will go a long way in protecting ourselves and others.

With love and blessings,

Jamie
